In 2008 I had the opportunity to participate in a Magnum Photos masterclass in Oslo. Under the inspiring leadership of Paolo Pellegrin we worked hard for 5 days to improve our skills. His instructions were clear; go out and don’t come back until you have portrayed an intense story.
I immediately thought about my first encounter with Oslo the day before. I was shocked by the public drug-abuse when I arrived at the Central Station. Everywhere around the station I saw hand-to-hand transactions by suspicious people and several addicts lying on the floor. Would it be possible to get in contact with one of them and would this person allow me to follow them? When I spoke to 36-year-old Vicky I was surprised about her openness. I asked if I could accompany her and take pictures? “Sure no problem” she said. So I followed her hunting for a shot, getting heroin injected by a friend and prostituting herself on the streets.
